Hoje são mamíferos estritamente aquáticos, que habitam rios, lagos, manguezais e águas oceânicas. Descendentes dos artiodátilos, os primeiros cetáceos eram animais quadrúpedes, que viviam em terra seca há cerca de 52 milhões de anos. Sua trajetória pelas águas começou somente mais tarde, há uns 39 milhões de anos. Os representantes atuais são classificados em odontocetáceos, espécies com dentes e predadoras (como botos, golfinhos e orcas), e misticetáceos (baleias), que no lugar de dentes possuem cerdas queratinosas na parte superior da boca para capturar da água pequenos crustáceos dos quais se alimentam.
