Também chamados de enguias-dinossauro, apareceram no planeta há aproximadamente 120 milhões de anos e hoje são encontrados exclusivamente nos charcos e alagadiços africanos. Além de possuírem corpos alongados e escamas rígidas, esses peixes apresentam uma sequência de numerosas barbatanas dorsais, todas sustentadas por espinhos. Quando a água oferece pouco oxigênio, são capazes de respirar o ar da atmosfera. Podem ainda se locomover por curtas distâncias em terra seca.
 

Also called dinosaur eels, they appeared on the planet approximately 120 million years ago and are now found exclusively in African marshes and swamps. In addition to having elongated bodies and rigid scales, these fish have a sequence of numerous dorsal fins, all supported by spines. When the water offers little oxygen, they are able to breathe air from the atmosphere. They can also move short distances on dry land.
