Surgiram por volta de 120 milhões de anos atrás, e se tornaram os predadores mais importantes dos ecossistemas marinhos do planeta. Suas patas e cauda se converteram em nadadeiras, e ao invés de pôr ovos, passaram a dar à luz filhotes vivos dentro d´água. Embora os primeiros mosassauros tivessem tamanhos modestos, algumas espécies ultrapassaram 15 metros de comprimento no auge do seu domínio do oceano - que terminou há 66 milhões de anos atrás, quando desapareceram sem deixar descendentes.
 

They emerged around 120 million years ago and became the most important predators in the planet's marine ecosystems. Their legs and tail were converted into fins, and instead of laying eggs, they began to give birth to live babies in the water. Although the first mosasaurs were modest in size, some species exceeded 15 meters in length at the height of their dominance of the ocean - which ended 66 million years ago, when they disappeared without descendants.
