They appeared on Earth around 233 million years ago and are the only dinosaurs that still survive today, through birds. The first theropods already walked on their hind legs, each supported on three elongated fingers with pointed claws. In the past most were carnivorous, but over time omnivorous and herbivorous species became more common. Feathers - which is now a common feature of all birds - is an ancient characteristic of these animals. Thanks to it, they learned to fly, and were able to colonize all the continents on the planet.
