Alguns dos primeiros saurópsidos, que chamamos genericamente de “pararrépteis”, incluíam animais de formas, tamanhos e estilos de vida variados. Alguns eram pequenos, furtivos e consumiam todo o tipo de alimentos que encontravam à disposição; outros se tornaram grandes e pesados, e adotaram uma dieta exclusivamente herbívora; alguns voltaram a viver no ambiente aquático, e seus corpos sofreram transformações profundas para que pudessem sobreviver nestas condições. Todos esses grupos desapareceram com o tempo, sem deixar descendentes.
 

Some of the earliest sauropsids, which are generically called “parareptiles,” included animals of varying shapes, sizes, and lifestyles. Some were small, stealthy and consumed all types of food they found available; others became large and heavy, and adopted an exclusively herbivorous diet; some returned to live in the aquatic environment, and their bodies underwent profound transformations so that they could survive in these conditions. All these groups disappeared over time, leaving no descendants.
