They appeared on the planet around 260 million years ago. Since then, they have become very diverse - in shapes, sizes and habits - and have occupied most of the terrestrial ecosystems, from the tropics to the poles. Although many of the earliest groups of archosauromorphs have now become completely extinct, the lineage survives today as crocodiles and alligators, as well as birds.
